Glossary of terms used by Peele Print

Sometimes the terms used in the printing trade can be confusing, so Peele Print have provided a simple guide to make your print and design ordering process even easier for you.

gsm

Grams per square metre (how paper is weighed)

cmyk

Cyan, magenta, yellow, black (process colours when producing full colour work)

ncr

Non carbon required (multi part sets such as invoices purchase orders etc.)

Bindery

Finishing department

Bleed

Printing that goes to the edge of printed matter

Blind embossing

An image pressed into a sheet without ink

Collate

A finishing term for gathering paper in precise order

Die

Metal rule or imaged block used to cut or place an image on paper in the finishing process

Diecuttng

Cutting images in or out of paper

Duotone

A halftone picture made up of two printed colours

Emboss

Pressing an image into paper so that it will create a raised image

Laminate

To cover with matt or gloss finish film

Perfect Bind

Binding that glues the edges of sheets to a cover like a telephone book

pms

The abbreviated name of the Pantone Colour Matching System

Saddle Stitch

Binding a booklet or magazine with staples in the seam where it folds

Score

A crease put on paper to help it fold better

Trapping

The ability to print one ink over the other
